Applications are invited from scholar-teachers with ranks of Professor, Senior Lecturer, and Lecturer in the faculties of Business, Communications, Humanities, Life Sciences, Engineering and Applied Sciences, Social Sciences, and Allied Health Sciences to join a company of scholars and a community of learners at Sindima memorial Institute of Arts and Technology, a premier university that will open August 2012, north of Blantyre, Malawi.


Professor

Candidates for the rank of Professor must have a demonstrated high level of competence in teaching and research extended consistently over a considerable span of time. The candidate Should have:

  • A terminal degree in the relevant discipline: Ph.D., D.Phil., M.D., D.B.A., or its equivalent
  • At least eleven (11) years experience in teaching 6 of which must be on Senior Lecturer.
  • Evidence of continued research and effective teaching.
  • Published with a monograph(s) and articles in recognised refereed journals related to the relevant discipline. At least six (6) articles in peer-reviewed journals for the faculties of science.
  • Supervised postgraduate degree candidates.
  • Evidence of attendance and contribution at learned conferences, seminars or workshops.
  • Evidence of having attempted or successfully applied for a grant, or research proposal
  • Membership in an academic association or organisation of the relevant discipline
  • Recognized and registered or registerable by relevant professional boards where applicable
  • Evidence of contribution to university life.
  • Evidence of effectiveness in teaching undergraduates and graduate as evidenced by peers and, or student evaluations.
  • Evidence of encouraging students' academic interests and research

Salary is highly competitive and commensurate to teaching experience and scholarship. Positions: 50

Senior Lecturer

Desirable candidates for the rank of Senior Lecturer should have:

  • A terminal degree in the relevant discipline: Ph.D., D.Phil., M.D., D.B.A., or its equivalent
  • At least eight (8) years of university teaching, five (5) of which as full-time Senior Lecturer
  • Successfully supervised at least four (4) Masters students and one (1) Ph.D. student since being appointed Senior Lecturer
  • Evidence of continuing research including having published at least five (5) articles in refereed journals since being appointed as Senior Lecturer
  • Evidence of sustained research and writing, and professional accomplishments
  • Evidence of having successfully applied for a grant, or research proposal
  • Evidence of attendance and contribution at learned conferences, seminars or workshops
  • Evidence of active participation in departmental activities and good quality teaching
  • Evidence of having attempted or successfully applied for a grant, or research proposal
  • engaged in independent teaching and research
  • Appropriate professional registration or certification
  • Evidence of substantial and successful experience in teaching undergraduates and graduate students

Lecturer

Desirable candidates for the position of lecturer should have:

  • A terminal degree in the relevant discipline: Ph.D., D.Phil., M.D., D.B.A., or its equivalent
  • Possess professional registration, or certification appropriate to relevant discipline.
  • Demonstrated high caliber in teaching undergraduates and graduate students
  • Show promise in scholarship by having proof of academic writing.

Salary highly competitive and commensurate to teaching experience and scholarship. Positions 45


Applications and nominations are invited from scholars, teachers, and administrators for positions of founding deans for the faculties of Business, Life Sciences, Engineering and Applied Sciences, Social Sciences, and Allied Health Sciences. The Founding Deans are expected to provide strong and energetic leadership and an innovative vision in shaping, together with the faculty, the future of their respective faculties. Candidates are expected to have an earned doctoral degree and at least ten years of teaching experience in undergraduate and post graduate education.

The successful candidate should:

  • Be a scholar-teacher with an established record of leadership with an open and collegial style, outstanding management, communication and interpersonal skills, an inspiring individual to teaching and support staff and students, someone with the capacity to build and sustain positive work relationships with other academic and administrative departments.
    Have the ability to attract, retain, and promote highly qualified teaching and support staff.

  • Show evidence of establishing an organisational management structure promoting efficiency and excellence.

  • Show evidence or demonstrable plan to develop and implement a major strategic plan of the candidate's faculty guided by standards of scholarly and professional excellence.
  • Have an eagerness to set ambitious, challenging, and tangible goals, and a relentless drive to achieve them.
  • Manage the faculty budget process including annual budget development and ongoing budget management.

  • Have the drive to improve the minds and lives of students in and out of the classroom.

  • Have proven high ethics and integrity, commitment to productive work ethic.
    The candidate will be willing to work collaboratively with the Vice Chancellor to whom the candidate will report and to promote the mission of Sindima Memorial Institute of Arts and Technology.
